Quistis quietly closed the door to her dormitory and walked down the lit hallway to her classroom.

“Let’s hope no one reminds me about what today is.” Quistis thought to herself sadly as she walked towards the cafeteria. Quistis looked inside the cafeteria and stood in line to get a cup of coffee and a doughnut. When she turned around, she gulped silently.

There they were.

The last people she wanted to see today.

Squall and Rinoa.

And there she was.

Happily holding a dozen long stemmed red roses.

Quistis quickly turned around and waited till they passed her without even noticing her. When she turned around for the second time, she saw Zell, blushing crazily.

Zell had just handed “Pigtail Girl” a dozen pink and white balloons and she was smiling. Then she jumped up from the table she was sitting at and wrapped her arms around Zell. He turned as red as an apple in seconds.

Quistis couldn’t take the torture anymore. She walked out the cafeteria with her coffee and doughnut and very hurriedly she caught the empty elevator.

When Quistis reached her floor, she walked into her classroom and closed her door. As she placed her coffee and doughnut on her desk, a voice spoke.

“Quistis?” said the familiar voice. Quistis jumped and Irvine got out from under her desk and stood up in front of her.

“IRVINE! You scared me!” Quistis said as she sighed of relief.

“Sorry, but I had to ask you a question.” Irvine replied as he pulled out a bag from behind his back. “I need to know if this is good enough for Selphie,” he said as he pulled out a big box of candy, dozens of red roses and a tiny black velvet box.

Quistis picked up the box and opened it. Inside was the most beautiful diamond ring that she had ever seen. The band was engraved inside. Quistis strained her eyes and read the following:

I’ll love you ‘till the day I die. -Irvine Kinneas

“Like it?” Irvine asked.

“It’s beautiful. She’ll love it,” said Quistis in a hushed whisper as she closed the small velvet box and handed it back to Irvine. Irvine smiled from ear to ear and happily put all the stuff back in the bag.

Quistis forced her tears back when Irvine said “Thanks. You’re a big help. I knew I could have counted on you.” He smiled. Quistis smiled weakly and Irvine walked out of her classroom.

Without a word, Quistis walked back to her desk and sat down. She then buried her face in her hands and began to cry.

“Why?” she said to herself. “Why…must…I…be…alone…on…this…day?” she cried. “Valentines Day is supposed to be a day for love right? I’m all alone…”

Quistis stayed in this position for quite some time. She didn’t notice it when Squall came in and when he saw her cry; he left the room without a word of concern.

After some time Quistis began to grow weary. She wasn’t sick…and she knew this feeling… someone was compressing time.

“Elle?” she said as she drifted into a deep sleep in the dream world.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Young Quistis was humming to herself as she was skipping home from school. She couldn’t wait to show her parents the surprise gift she made at school for them. As she skipped through the fields, she saw some beautiful wild flowers.

“Mother would love those!” little Quistis said as she skipped to the flowerbed. She picked a bundle of flowers and went on her way home. She had been living with her foster parents for at least two years now and she had almost forgotten the memories of the orphanage at the lighthouse.

“MOM! I’m HOME!” yelled Quistis as she ran to the kitchen to greet her mother. But there was no answer. When she looked in the kitchen, no one was there.

“Mom? Dad?” said Quistis in a worried tone. When she looked at the table, she saw a plate of fresh baked cookies. “Ooh! Cookies!” said little Quistis with glee. Right next to the plate was a folded piece of paper. It was a note from her mother. It said:

Little Quisty,

Enjoy the cookies I baked just for you! They’re your favorite too. I apologize that I wasn’t home when you came home from school. I had to get some milk and bread for our dinner. I’ll be home soon.

Love,

Mom

Quistis sat down and ate cookies while she was reading a book that her father gave her for a present yesterday.

After some time, she began to get really sleepy and so she fell asleep rested her head on her arms with the book in the other hand.

About five minutes later, her mother came in.

“Quistis!” she said as she headed for the kitchen. When she looked inside, there was little Quistis, still in her school uniform, sleeping right next to the plate of cookies and the book in her hand. Quistis’ mother smiled. She walked towards Quistis and rested her hands on her shoulders and whispered “Quisty, I’m home,” in Quistis’ ear.

“Huh?” said Quistis as she woke up startled from her sleep. When she turned around, her eyes sparkled. “Mom! You’re home!” as she thrust her arms around her mother.

Quistis’ foster mother looked like an angel from heaven, as so to what little Quisty thought. Her mother had lively green eyes and long beautiful brown hair. She was wearing a beautiful spring dress, which had daisies planted all over the dress. Her mother’s name was Tasha.

“Did’ya buy food Mom?” Quistis asked.

“Yes, I did. So why don’t you help me prepare dinner tonight?” asked Quistis’ mother.

“Okiedokie!” said little Quistis.

As they prepared dinner together they heard the door close. They stood there silent as a familiar voice filled the room. “I’m home!”

“Daddy!” exclaimed Quistis as she ran towards her father whom she loved very much. When they caught embrace, they hugged and kissed each other on the cheeks. Suddenly Quistis’ father threw her up and swung her around the room. Quistis squealed with glee as her father caught her in his big strong arms and they both giggled softly

Quistis’ father’s name was John. He was wearing a business suit and his glasses. He had gentle brown eyes and brown hair. To Quistis, he looked like a teacher instead of a business executive. Quistis’ mother walked in the room and gave her husband a quick peck on the lips. “Hi Honey. How was work today?” she asked.

“Well…” he said as he put Quistis down. “I didn’t get my monthly pay today.”

“What?!” yelled Quistis’ mother. She had a confusing but angry look on her face as she said it. Then she realized that little Quistis was looking at her. So she kneeled down to Quistis and said “Quistis, why don’t you change into comfortable clothes and wash up for dinner okay?”

“Okay.”

Quistis walked up the stairs as her parents were whispering violently to each other. Quistis knew that her parents had problems with money. Her father’s boss pays whenever he felt like it, which stressed her parents out cause they had to cut down on food. Quistis changed into a large blue t-shirt and her favorite blue jeans. Then walked down the stairs quietly expecting to hear her parents whispering again…but she heard silence. So she walked into the kitchen where the dining table was set, and her parents were sitting there waiting for Quistis. Quistis walked to the table and sat down. Her parents began preparing their plates and Quistis also began preparing her plate. They ate their dinner in silence until they heard a gunshot in the distance. Then they heard the gunshots get closer and closer. Quistis was so frightened that she let out a shrill scream.

“Quistis!” yelled her father as he jumped up and ran to Quistis. She fell to the ground and her father came and covered her with his body. Quistis’ mother dropped down and ducked under the table. The gunshots went on for some time and Quistis truly thought that this was the end.

After some time, the gunshots finally stopped and Quistis’ father stayed in his position a little longer just to make sure that everything was okay. Quistis’ father got up from his position and looked out of the window.

This is what little Quistis saw. When her father looked out the window, he was shot through the chest. Quistis and her mother both screamed as he fell to the ground, and he laid there, cold and dead. With his last breath, he said, “I’ll always…love…you both…” and after this happened, he died. Quistis sat there and cried and her mother stood up and opened the door.

Quisty’s mother stood there with an angry look on her face with hot tears running down her cheeks and stood at the door and screamed, “You took my husband’s life, now take mine!” Then numerous gunshots hit her as blood shot out of her back and onto the walls and she fell to her knees.

Quistis sat there in shock…her mother laid there, her beautiful dress drenched in blood. As the pool of blood began growing…her mother’s breathing became heavier. Quistis crawled towards her mom and looked at her. Her mother’s face was pale…Quistis’ mother lifted her hand to touch Quistis’ cheek…for the last time.

“Quistis…promise me…you will never…forget me.” She said slowly…while gasping for air. She smiled at Quistis and held her hand, tight. The pain in her body began to fade…as her vision began to go blurry.

“No Mommy! I will never forget you! Everything will be okay!” Quistis began sobbing. Tears ran down her cheeks and fell on her mother’s hand. “Don’t leave me! I don’t want to be alone again!”

Quistis’ mother looked at her and smiled. “But you are not alone…Dad and I will always be watching over you. We’ll be your guardian angels forever Quistis, until we meet again…” she began coughing up blood. Quistis began crying.

Her mother saw this and said, “Now Quistis don’t cry. You’ll never be alone. I’ll be there for you,” a tear flowed down her cheek. With all her strength and breath, she said one last thing to Quistis, “I love you Quisty,” and right there, she died.

Quistis sat there, looking at her mother, who was lifeless. She looked around. She saw blood all over the house, and she looked at her father, his face expression was cold and it made her shudder.

As she sat there, she didn’t cry. She just sat there, looking around the house and while this was happening, a two Dollet soldiers came inside and saw Quistis alive.

“Look! A survivor!” one yelled. He walked towards Quistis’ mother, while the other went to take a look at her father. They looked at each other and looked at Quistis.

“I’m sorry, but your parents are dead.”

Quistis sat there, motionless and stared at the floor. She looked up and said, “w-where will I go now? My parents are dead…w-w-who’ll take care of me now? Who’s gonna love me like they did? I’m all alone…again.” Tears began streaming down her face. The soldiers looked at each other and said “don’t worry, we’ll find an orphanage for you.” They guy reached his hand out for Quistis to take, which she did and they walked out of the house, but Quistis stopped in her tracks.

“What’s the matter?” he asked.

She pointed back towards her house, “I need my stuff.” she said quietly.

The man let her hand go and she ran into the house, upstairs and grabbed her backpack. She looked around and began stuffing some clothes and little things inside. As she began to walk out of her room, she saw one thing she would have to take. She walked to her dresser and took the framed photo of her family and put it in her bag. She looked at her room one last time and walked out…forever.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Quistis was still hunched over her desk and while she was dreaming, someone came in and picked Quistis up and walked out of her room, locking it. The person walked down the hallway and went down the elevator, with Quistis in his strong arms, comfortably asleep. He got out of the elevator, and walked to the dormitory. He took Quistis to her room and he laid her on her bed. As he was going to walk out of her room, his eyes fell upon something that caught his eye.

A framed picture on her desk. It showed a happy couple holding little Quistis. They are all smiling and laughing, looking so joyful. He looked at the photo, then at Quistis. He then walked over to Quistis and put his hand on her cheek. Then he sat at the edge of her bed and leaned towards her…and kissed her lightly on the lips. He looked at her and smiled, and walked out of the room.

A while later, Quistis woke up from the ‘dream world’ and looked around. She wasn’t in her classroom anymore. She looked confused and saw that she was on her bed, in her dorm. The sunlight was shining in her eyes, for it was only the afternoon. She sat up and looked around her room, with a surprised look on her face.

Quistis saw red and white heart-shaped balloons all over her room, and dozens and dozens of beautiful roses on her desk in a vase. She got up and walked around her room, wondering who would give her such things. She looked in her bookshelf, and saw a box of chocolates and she looked on top of her dresser. It had a small red box there, with a card. She held the small box in her hand and opened it. Inside was a beautiful ring with a little pearl on it with two small diamond studs on the sides. She put it on her finger and smiled. She then took it off and put it back in the box. She saw the card.

Her hands trembled as she took the card out of the envelope and when she read it, tears began streaming down her cheeks and she was smiling. The note enclosed had said:

Though you may think that I do not show my affection for you, I’ll always love you. Forever and ever…

The card was not signed.

THE END.
